Hi I’m Crista, the owner, designer and maker at Samphire Jewellery.
I have lived by the sea in Devon for 20 years with my husband and two children. My background is actually in foreign languages and although I no longer directly work with them all the time, I still love to travel and speak my languages whenever I can. My family is from Holland so I’ve always been drawn to all things Dutch, Danish and Scandi in general. I love their style and simple cool colours and it inspires the simple, stylish clean-lined jewellery I love best.
So where did it all begin?
I started Samphire Jewellery about 10 years ago after attending a residential silver-smithing course. I began to make simple pieces for myself and for friends and family who seemed to love them and encouraged me to sell a few pieces and so it began.
I feel really lucky to work with beautiful beads…..I love silver and gold, beautiful pearls and sparkly gemstones. My favourite colours are cool and muted and I have become just a little bit obsessed with bracelets! I am inspired by nature, the sea and of course fashion and style.
What do you find tricky as a small creative business?
Running my own small business is something I feel very proud of and excited by and working from home is lovely but it can also be frustrating and even lonely at times. In the quiet times I make sure I remain positive and use my time to plan ahead.
Being able to sell online through the wonderful Walter & May website opens a whole new level for me as a small creative business. It means I can access lovely customers who I wouldn’t otherwise come into contact with. I am so inspired by all the creative business featured on the site. I can’t believe how many fabulous people there are making such gorgeous things and I am so proud to be one of them. I certainly know where I’ll be doing my Christmas shopping!
What makes you do a happy dance?
Of course I jump for joy when I’m inundated with orders and love all my wonderful customers. It’s the best feeling when I get orders from someone I don’t know and even better when they tell me they love what they buy.
What are your top tips for other business owners?
My advice to other small business is to believe in yourself and if something doesn’t succeed, don’t dwell…move on. Try to never compare your success to others (not easy I know). Be consistent and plan ahead…if you feel down or frustrated, get out, walk the dog or better still go and have tea and cake at your local café!
What does the future hold?
For the future I hope that Samphire will continue to slowly grow and that I can continue to make beautiful things that people love and make them feel good.
I am thrilled to be on board with Walter and May and all the other fabulous sellers and look forward to “meeting” many lovely new customers.
