Don’t get me wrong, this is by no means a woe is me post. Nor a guilt trip. But I think it’s important to have a little honesty and reality here.
We have been open for 2 months now, and oh my, time has really flown by. In a previous post I talked about the risks involved and not knowing if it would work or not – 2 months in and it’s way too early to even ask that question I think. What we have to do is learn continually and move and shake in order to make it work.
But in a retail climate that is at best suffering a bad head cold and feeling rather sorry for itself, things are tough.
I’ve been inspired to write this post after we took just £13 in the shop one day this week. £13, that ain’t gunna cut it I’m afraid. If that were to continue over a few days, that’s way more than a bad head cold. That’s on your back full blown man flu.
And it’s not just us, independent businesses are struggling online and on the highstreet. Is it the weather, is it the holidays, location, can we blame Trump? You find yourself questioning everything. It doesn’t really matter what it is really, we can’t wait for the weather to be the perfect condition for shopping small, the fact remains retail needs to adapt and raise awareness of the importance of shopping small and supporting independent brands.
Remember the torrential rain last week? Yep us too. And we are reminded every day right now as we clear up the flood in our cellar. We were super lucky as things could have been a lot worse for us but it has let. And we have insurance and all that jazz but that doesn’t help the immediate impact of any damage to stock, displays and the cleaning paraphernalia needed to clean it up!
I was reminded of the fragility of small business. How a set back really can make or break a business and how the support of customers to an independent business quite literally means everything.
But I said this wasn’t a woe is me post and it’s not. It’s just a this is what’s going on right now post. We still love the shop and everything in it. We love meeting our customers, old and new, we love meeting new small business and growing our collection every week and dare I say it we are loving planning for the big ‘C’ word ( I daren’t say it yet! )
Every day is a school day for us and we’ll carry on moving and shaking and adjusting and being honest about it too!
And if you are looking for gifts or homewares in the next few months, please do consider shopping small.
We’ll love you forever. 😊
